Finding Freedom in Difficult Times: Online Buddhism Six-week Course starts

Ordinary life can be hard, but things are particularly difficult right now for many of us. What can Buddhism and meditation offer in times of crisis?

The Buddha found a way to transform anxiety into ease, hate into love, despair into hope and ignorance into wisdom. He found a path that can be followed all the way to enlightenment and, best of all, he discovered that this path can be walked by anyone. Come and find out how!

As well as an introduction to Buddhist teaching, this course provides practical instruction in two Buddhist meditation practices to develop mindfulness and positivity.

Mindfulness and Kindness Online Lunchtime Meditation Class

Ordinary life can be hard, but things are particularly difficult right now for many of us. How can Buddhist meditation help? Meditation can help us develop mindfulness, kindness, clarity, positivity, and can enable us to gain a bigger perspective on life. Through regular practice and over time, we can learn our mind’s habits, and cultivate new, more positive ways of being in the world. Come and find out how!

Our weekday lunchtime meditation sessions are guided and are suitable for anyone.

First-time meditators are particularly welcome but old hands very welcome too! Even in an online virtual group, meditating together can help us feel connected with others, whatever our different situations and there’s usually a bit of time at the end to ask questions or talk about how it went. These sessions usually go ahead on bank holidays.

Eight Step Recovery Online

Using the Buddha’s Teachings on the Path of Recovery

A friendly and warm weekly online Eight Step Meeting, for anyone in recovery, at whatever stage. No need to book – just join us by clicking the button below a few minutes before we start. We have been meeting weekly since January, first in the Buddhist Centre and online since lockdown.

This meeting explores recovery through the lens of the Buddhist teachings, and Buddhism through the lens of recovery. If you are attending Twelve Step meetings, this can be your expression of your eleventh step. If you are not, it can be another way to approach your recovery. This is an extra meeting to complement your recovery, whatever that looks like.

Open to anyone interested in exploring recovery using the Buddha’s teachings. We are a self-supporting group and encourage all group members to give what they can to help the group.

The meetings use Eight Step Recovery – Using the Buddha’s Teachings to Overcome Addiction, available online from Windhorse Publications, as the main source of content for shares and discussions.

Eight Step Recovery – An Independent Group

Although this meeting uses Manchester Buddhist Centre’s facilities, it is not one of their activities. We are an independent group of people, all in recovery, undertaking the Eight Step programme, meeting weekly in this peer-led recovery group. You can contact us through the Buddhist Centre though if you need to. As with other Recovery groups, we ask you to please respect people’s personal sharing – let what you hear stay in the meeting.

Note on Safeguarding from Manchester Buddhist Centre

Manchester Buddhist Centre recognises the value and benefit of using the Buddha’s teachings to help overcome addiction, and supports peer-led groups exploring these issues. The Centre’s trustees also recognise their responsibility to safeguard adults using the premises, or children connected to those adults, who may be deemed to be at risk of harm. In consultation with the Eight Step group, we have agreed that everyone in the group bears responsibility for passing on information to the Centre’s Safeguarding Officer if they believe a child or adult is at risk of significant harm.

Vishangka, or Keith Green, is our Safeguarding Officer, responsible for the protection of children and adults who may be at risk at Manchester Buddhist Centre.

What does the Buddhism Course cover?

We explore who the Buddha was – how he sought an answer to the problem of human suffering, and found it through the experience that Buddhists call Awakening. We’ll ask what this word means and how the Buddha, having found it for himself, found ways of communicating it to others, right down to ourselves, through teachings that apply directly to human beings, independent of time or culture.

Essential Dharma Training for Men: The True Individual

Led by Ratnaguna, Mahasraddha, Arthavadin and Vishangka.

The True Individual

‘Am I an individual, or just a social unit? This is the central question of our personal lives, and it is one we need to keep asking ourselves, and keep trying to penetrate more deeply. It is also the key to the development of a sangha, a spiritual community. No individuals, no sangha. Any consideration of what the sangha is must therefore include as full an understanding as possible of the nature of individuality. So – what is an individual?’

Sangharakshita from ‘What is the Sangha?’

Join us in the second of our sessions exploring the teaching of the True Individual.

Last time we heard the qualities of the true individual – deep self awareness, emotional positivity, taking responsibility, and freedom from group conditioning. These qualities aren’t abstract, but to be experienced and developed as part of a deepening spiritual life.

In this session, using meditation, readings and puja, Mahasraddha and friends will explore these qualities as they are found in the figure of the Buddha, and help us to use our imagination to contact these qualities

Who is the event for?

It’s for Order members, Mitras and Centre regulars who have completed a Buddhism Going Deeper course. Please get in touch if you’re not sure.

Programme:

9.30: Intro by Vishangka

Online Sangha Evening: Book Launch with Danapriya

Centre regulars get together for talks, discussion and friendship at our fortnightly Sangha evening. No need to book, just turn up a few minutes before we start. Each Sangha evening varies, but there will usually be short talks and discussion, often in small groups, with a short break around the mid-point and a closing ritual.

Seeing things as they really are

Tonight Danapriya joins us to launch his new book It’s Not Out There, published by Windhorse. He will be giving a talk which will weave in chapters from the book about ‘how to see differently and live an extraordinary ordinary life’.

Danapriya was ordained in 2001. He founded the Deal Buddhist Group in 2007 and ran the group for eleven years. Currently there is a thriving sangha in Deal with nine order members. Danapriya now wants to spend the next decade ‘sharing what he has been given’ by so many wise people. This book is part of that sharing.

Danapriya speaks about It’s Not Out There

This event leads into another at 9 pm, an opening ritual and dedication ceremony as we join our friends across the worldwide Triratna Buddhist Community for our Sangha Day Festival of Light.

Who is the event for?

Suitable for anyone who has experience of our two meditation practices, Mindfulness of Breathing and Metta Bhavana, and is open to Buddhist ritual.
