A friendly and warm weekly online Eight Step Meeting, for anyone in recovery, at whatever stage. No need to book – just join us by clicking the button below a few minutes before we start.

This meeting explores recovery through the lens of the Buddhist teachings, and Buddhism through the lens of recovery. If you are attending Twelve Step meetings, this can be your expression of your eleventh step. If you are not, it can be another way to approach your recovery. This is an extra meeting to complement your recovery, whatever that looks like.

Open to anyone interested in exploring recovery using the Buddha’s teachings. We are a self-supporting group and encourage all group members to give what they can to help the group.

The meetings use Eight Step Recovery – Using the Buddha’s Teachings to Overcome Addiction, available online from Windhorse Publications, as the main source of content for shares and discussions.

Eight Step Recovery – An Independent Group

Although this meeting uses Manchester Buddhist Centre’s facilities, it is not one of their activities. We are an independent group of people, all in recovery, undertaking the Eight Step programme, meeting weekly in this peer-led recovery group. You can contact us through the Buddhist Centre though if you need to. As with other Recovery groups, we ask you to please respect people’s personal sharing – let what you hear stay in the meeting.

Note on Safeguarding from Manchester Buddhist Centre

Manchester Buddhist Centre recognises the value and benefit of using the Buddha’s teachings to help overcome addiction, and supports peer-led groups exploring these issues. The Centre’s trustees also recognise their responsibility to safeguard adults using the premises, or children connected to those adults, who may be deemed to be at risk of harm. In consultation with the Eight Step group, we have agreed that everyone in the group bears responsibility for passing on information to the Centre’s Safeguarding Officer if they believe a child or adult is at risk of significant harm.

Sthirajyoti, or Ari Ahonen, is our Safeguarding Officer, responsible for the protection of children and adults who may be at risk at Manchester Buddhist Centre.

Young Buddhists Group: Checkin

A friendly informal group for young adults over eighteen, led by young people for young people.

Checkin is a monthly in-person meet-up to chat about how things are going in our meditation and Buddhist practice, and to be part of the Manchester Young Buddhist community.

It’s in addition to our usual Young Buddhists Group meeting, that happens on the first Monday of the month. It’s completely informal and you don’t need any prior experience to attend.


Who is the Centre’s Young Buddhists Group for?

Anyone aged 18 to 30. We also have a Manchester Young Buddhists group on Facebook.

Feel free to arrive at the Buddhist Centre from 6.30pm onwards, we might also hang around for a bit after the session.

Lunchtime Led Meditation at the Centre

A regular short class for anyone who wants to try meditation, or come to a led meditation session from time to time. No need to book. The class is currently held here in-person in the Centre's Lotus Hall on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

£5 standard rate or £3 concessionary rate

• We don’t want to turn anyone away. If you can’t afford the charges, then have a word with us - we’ll try and help
• Please make sure you arrive in good time so the class isn’t disturbed by latecomers. We'll do our best to be flexible if you're delayed, but can't admit anybody more than five minutes after the start time


About Meditation

Meditation can help us develop mindfulness, kindness, clarity, positivity, and can enable us to gain a bigger perspective on life. Whether online or in the same space, meditating together can help us feel connected with others, whatever our situation.

• If you'd also like an unguided daily morning sit, the Buddhist Centre Online offers online open meditation, 7.30 - 8.15 am, Monday to Saturday.

Sunday Puja Group

A fortnightly get-together for anybody interested in and inspired by Buddhist ritual. We gather together, spend a little time with one another, and then quietly make our way up to the shrine room to connect with that which is most important to us.

Through a regular and sincere practice of puja, in company with our fellow aspirants, we can refine our emotional positivity to such a pitch that we begin to break through our habitual self-centredness and isolation, and feel an empathy with all life

About Buddhist Ritual

Ritual is an aspect of Buddhist practice that can feel quite alien and even strange to our modern temperament. Despite this, many of us have found that engaging in puja – Buddhist ritual – has become an important part of our Buddhist life. It can help bring our values into our lives in a more embodied and wholehearted way – from our heads to our hearts.

During this morning, we’ll be led by one of our regulars in a ritual. Often it’s the seven-fold puja, but sometimes it’s something different too. We want to create an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. It’s rare in our busy world to have time to be still, so these sessions can be a precious opportunity to let go of our busyness and listen to the deeper currents of our being.

If you’re familiar and comfortable with Buddhist ritual and want to come along, do just turn up – no need to book!

Cleaning Together as Spiritual Practice

Cia and the regular Tuesday cleaning crew invite us all to join them for a deeper cleaning experience on these monthly Saturday afternoon sessions. It’s a chance to spend time together in beautiful surroundings, working on something important to all of us – our beautiful Centre. We can get to grips with the less regular and maybe more time-consuming jobs at these sessions. No experience needed!

Cia says:

We’ll meet between 1 pm and 1:30 for a cup of something together, and then once the Tools for Living class has dispersed, we’ll clean until about 3 pm. Do join us for the whole session or just part of it – no need to say you’re coming, just turn up or maybe stay on after Tools? You’re also always welcome to join our regular Tuesday clean-up, from 11.30 am to 12.30. For many of us, working together to keep the Centre beautiful has become an important part of our practice.

Embracing Ourselves, Joining Community: Six-Week Meditation Course starts

It’s so easy to rush through life, not living fully. On top of this, modern life can so easily leave us feeling isolated and lonely.

Meditation can help. Through this ancient practice, we can enter into a gentle, loving awareness of ourselves. By meditating with others during the six weeks, we also build a trusting, meaningful community.

During this six-week course, in-person at the Buddhist Centre, you’ll be introduced by experienced meditators to the two main meditation practices we teach at the Centre.

These meditations help you to enter into a more loving and aware relationship with the world and other people.

A Monthly Meet-up for People of Colour

An informal, welcoming space for all people of colour to learn, explore and connect around meditation and the Buddha’s teachings, led by Ratnasagara and Āryarakṣitā. Future 2022 dates are 26th November, 17th December.

Six-Week Intro to Buddhism and Meditation Course starts

Change Ourselves, Change the World

Join us for this six-week course on Tuesday evenings, here in-person at the Buddhist Centre.

We’ll join together, form a trusting community and learn about the Buddha’s journey, as well as the key teachings of Buddhism. The course will include in-depth teaching about the two main meditation practices we teach here at the Buddhist Centre. Perfect for those completely new to meditation, as well as those who are already somewhat familiar.


Payment

The price for the six weeks is £90 standard rate / £60 concessionary / £30 age 18 - 25. Payment still a problem? These are very difficult times for us, and through the pandemic we have lost much of our income but not much of our costs. However, we don't want to turn anyone away from our courses.
