Eight Step Recovery Online

Using the Buddha’s Teachings on the Path of Recovery

A friendly and warm weekly online Eight Step Meeting, for anyone in recovery, at whatever stage. No need to book – just join us by clicking the button below a few minutes before we start. We have been meeting weekly since January, first in the Buddhist Centre and online since lockdown.

This meeting explores recovery through the lens of the Buddhist teachings, and Buddhism through the lens of recovery. If you are attending Twelve Step meetings, this can be your expression of your eleventh step. If you are not, it can be another way to approach your recovery. This is an extra meeting to complement your recovery, whatever that looks like.

Open to anyone interested in exploring recovery using the Buddha’s teachings. We are a self-supporting group and encourage all group members to give what they can to help the group.

The meetings use Eight Step Recovery – Using the Buddha’s Teachings to Overcome Addiction, available online from Windhorse Publications, as the main source of content for shares and discussions.

Eight Step Recovery – An Independent Group

Although this meeting uses Manchester Buddhist Centre’s facilities, it is not one of their activities. We are an independent group of people, all in recovery, undertaking the Eight Step programme, meeting weekly in this peer-led recovery group. You can contact us through the Buddhist Centre though if you need to. As with other Recovery groups, we ask you to please respect people’s personal sharing – let what you hear stay in the meeting.

Note on Safeguarding from Manchester Buddhist Centre

Manchester Buddhist Centre recognises the value and benefit of using the Buddha’s teachings to help overcome addiction, and supports peer-led groups exploring these issues. The Centre’s trustees also recognise their responsibility to safeguard adults using the premises, or children connected to those adults, who may be deemed to be at risk of harm. In consultation with the Eight Step group, we have agreed that everyone in the group bears responsibility for passing on information to the Centre’s Safeguarding Officer if they believe a child or adult is at risk of significant harm.

Sthirajyoti, or Ari Ahonen, is our Safeguarding Officer, responsible for the protection of children and adults who may be at risk at Manchester Buddhist Centre.

We want to offer as much as we can freely online for as long as we can. These are very difficult times for us though, and being mostly closed for so long means we have lost much of our income but not much of our costs: we need your help! Young Buddhists Group: Checkin

A friendly informal group for young adults over eighteen, led by young people for young people.

Checkin is a monthly in-person meet-up to chat about how things are going in our meditation and Buddhist practice, and to be part of the Manchester Young Buddhist community.

It’s in addition to our usual Young Buddhists Group meeting, that happens on the first Monday of the month. It’s completely informal and you don’t need any prior experience to attend.


Who is the Centre’s Young Buddhists Group for?

Anyone aged 18 to 30.  We also have a Manchester Young Buddhists group on Facebook.

Feel free to arrive at the Buddhist Centre from 18:45pm onwards, we might also hang around for a bit afterwards to socialise.

Young Buddhists Group: Re-entering the World

A Friendly Informal Group for Young Adults over Eighteen

Led by young people for young people, we are supporting one another to deepen our experience of the Dharma, through friendship, events and study.


Re-entering the World

This evening will be led by Oskar. He says:

A theme that keeps re-occurring in conversation at the moment is the range of ways that we are adjusting to the recent lifting of restrictions.

Some have jumped headfirst into socialising while others are quite happy staying quiet for a while longer. Some are feeling the thrill of the newfound freedom while others feel intensely anxious and overwhelmed. For most of us, it’s a mixture of both. The common thread is that this is an unusual experience and one we’re all still working out how to navigate our way through.

In this first session back at the Buddhist Centre, we will be focusing on this re-adjustment. We will have a chance to talk through our experiences, be guided in some techniques for emotional processing and of course actually meet in person! In keeping with the theme, this will be a gentle session.


Who is the Young Buddhists Group for?

Anyone aged 18 – 30 who is interested in exploring and practising Buddhism with other younger people. We meet on the first and third Monday evening of the month. Interested? Just come along to one of our meetings or get in touch with us through the Centre. We also have a Manchester Young Buddhists Group on Facebook.

There’s no need to book. We gather together in the Buddhist Centre lounge about 15 minutes before the start of the session and sometimes hang out together afterwards. It’ll be great to have you with us!

There's no charge to attend this event, but as an unfunded charity, we rely on the generosity of people who use and value the Centre to help cover running costs, over £6,000 a week. We will welcome donations on the day and beyond.

• Please make sure you arrive in good time so the class isn’t disturbed by latecomers. We'll do our best to be flexible if you're delayed, but can't admit anybody more than five minutes after the start time

Welcoming Liberation: Racial Diversity and Connection

A Space for Thriving BIPOC / BAME Dharma and Community Connection

An online event on the last Saturday of every month for Black, Indigenous, People of Color / Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic people, organised by the Triratna Buddhist Community.

What is the Space?

This is a gathering for people practising the Dharma, at any stage of that journey and experience, and who also come from the richly diverse lived experiences of these intentionally welcomed identities: Black, Indigenous, and people of color inclusive of Asian / Pacific Islander, South East Asian, Native Hawaiian, Latinx, Arab / Middle Eastern, biracial, mixed heritage, multiracial, and any others identifying as non-white.

A Welcoming International and Intentional Triratna Community Space for:

• Authentic connection and co-creating culturally diverse community, or sangha
• Deepening Dharma practice through meditation, reflection and real conversations
• To practise welcoming, empathy, healing, wholeness, complexity, liberation and joy
• Learning from each other and with a variety of BIPOC / BAME Triratna Order members and community members
• Making more possible genuine connection with the Triratna Buddhist Community in this space, and beyond
