Order Members’ Day with Ratnaguna
Sun 12th Aug : 10:30 am - 4:30 pmFree
Arouse in yourselves the highest kind of love, reverence, and serene faith.
Forty-two years ago Bhante led a seminar on the first two chapters of the Ratnagunasamcayagatha – The Collection of Verses on Precious Qualities. That seminar had a very big effect on the Order and movement, mainly because of what Bhante considered to be one of the main messages of the text, which he put in terms of the Greater Mandala of aesthetic appreciation – or uselessness! Our main task as Buddhists is to contemplate the universe. Everything we do – all the good things that we do in order to spread the Dharma and help people – should be done in the context of the Greater Mandala.
I recently led a retreat at Padmaloka on this text, and I asked Śraddhapa if he would do a new translation especially for that retreat. He did so and on this Order Day we will explore his translation, which is rather different from Edward Conze’s – the one that Bhante used in his seminar.
The Ratnagunasamcayagatha is one of the earliest Mahayana Sutras and also one of the earliest of the Perfection of Wisdom texts, and I think it has some important things to say about the nature of the spiritual life.
You can read Śraddhapa’s translation here.
This is a dana event, you can book online or via reception. Please bring vegan lunch to share.
