Online Sangha Evening: Dharma Practice and Race
Fri 23rd Apr : 7:00 pm - 8:45 pm

A Dialogue between Friends
This evening we will join together with members of our Sangha, exploring racial conditioning in the light of our Dharma practice and lives. Many of you will know that since the death of George Floyd in May 2020, members of our Sangha came together to explore “race” through the lens of the Dharma and our individual conditioning and lived experiences. Tonight we will hear from some of those Sangha members. Amongst them are Karen and Sundeep who write:
“What we are offering is a conversation, a dialogue, between friends around a difficult area that is not often spoken of – that of our racialised histories and conditioning. It will not be a prepared talk or a reading from a script. It will be a live, real conversation between two spiritual friends – one white and one person of colour. It feels tender and uncomfortable to do this so openly, and yet for both of us, it feels important to do so. What we will say will not be perfect, personal or permanent – it will simply be an attempt to open a dialogue and a curiosity to each other and amongst us all to explore our response and how we can approach the area with openness, exploration and connectedness.”
Sundeep and Karen have been inspired by reading Ruth King’s Mindful of Race:
“…This “interrelated structure of reality” points us towards the idea of ultimate reality or non duality – our kinship in each other’s lives. Yet we must first understand the ways in which we have been conditioned to relate to each other before we can know the true freedom of this wisdom”
